Week 10 #23 Farewell

I think therefor I am.

I guess he thought of hunger and they say you are what you eat.

Errr..or something like that.

Well it's over and none to sooner, phew!

Joking, joking but I do have to say it was fun. It was really enlightening and even gave me a computer geek a surprise that there is alot more out there than what I know.

I have come away using pretty much everything on this training. From the LOLCAT maker to the Slideshow to th Overdrive feature.

Rock on!

Week 9 #22

Downloadable media.

We've all downloaded media before. From downloading music, files, videos to downloading webpages.

Some sites you visit are free some other sites ask you to pay for content. Most music sites ask you to buy music for a flat fee. 99 cents or $1.29 depending on the bit rate.

But what if all the music was free. What if books where like that also. Instead of buying books you could download them and read them on your e-book or listen to them on a cd/thumb drive/computer.

You can grab a MP3 player like an Ipod or creative Zen/Zune and take it with you on the go. It works great with long travel and working out.

Looking at the different sites that allow free downloadable books compared to us. As their website functions different from us but have the same concept. Some of the differences of course are the way the layout and search function. But other difference have to do with the checkout time and the media.

I do like our Overdrive system but that's because I'm more familiar with it. I will be trying out the other two sites more and see which one I prefer.

Podcast Smodcast

That'd be kind of cool if they had smodcasts :o

Back ladies and gentlement from my vacation. Vacation as in.. I was away for a day at work and came back to find more work piled on my desk. Well to pass the time I decided to listen to some podcasts.

Yes a podcast! The type that land on earth, take peoples bodies and replicate themselves!

Yeah outlandish story but it definitely scared ya!

Ok Podcast. Podcast are basically streaming sound over the internet. We're used to that with music streamingand video streaming. But since it doesn't have music but it's more like a radio show.

Well we call that podcast! People log on each day to listen to their favorite podcast while doing work online. It's a pretty cool feature since if your boss walks in you won't get in trouble for reading your favorite article. Instead you listen to them.

You can also add podcast RSS to your browser or RSS readers. It makes it easy to listen to them with one click then by searching them.

It's great and adds alot of versatility to the internet.

Go online and type in "Google.com" in your browser. Type in your favorite tech, news website to find different podcasts. Listen and enjoy.

Youtube killed the video star!

Today your's truly will be talking about Youtube.

What you already know about Youtube? I'm sure you don't! Haha!

Wait.. so you know that people upload their videos to this sight and share them with other people?

Wellll.... for those who don't know (probably 1% of the world) Youtube is a website that people upload their videos and share them with others.

What!? Don't look at me like that. What!? I said that already?

Well..then.. you pretty much know 90% of Youtube. If you have a great, funny, moving, drama, or just plain want to see yourself on youtube, you can!

There are plenty of videos online if you don't want to upload your own. Here is a funny example of a video from people playing World of Warcraft:

After this video was posted it pretty much made Lerooooy Jenkins a star, his 15 minutes of fame. Over 3million have downloaded this video. You can also link videos to other peoples website, myspace or blogs and share it with them.

You can find videos from 70's, 80's all the way up until now. So if you want see that Depeche Mode music video.. well you just search for it. Then you can figure out that...the 80's weren't that cool and the clothes.

So register and pick your favorite Youtube videos and have them in your profile. Hop on and enjoy.

I'm a video producer

Happy Holidays everyone!

I'm here to give each and everyone of you a present! That's right.. EACH ONE OF YOU!

Yes you may think it'll cost me a gajillion dollars if there was a number so high. Luckily my sight doesn't get many hits and gajillion is a fake number.

So what is this present. I call it:

ZOHO!

What in the heck is Zoho and what do people keep asking me to stop making up words.

Well have you ever bought a computer and it didn't come with Microsoft Office and you needed it to type up something.

Of course you have notepad and wordpad on your computer but they aren't as powerful and are matter of fact strip downed version of Word.

Well with Zoho you can use a powerful word processor without having to buy a $150 program.

Get online and register and you'll be surprised at how many programs they have that are free. Spreadsheets, Presentation, Meeting and are all for free. Hop on!

Oh and I want something in return for Christmas :p

Week 8: #18

There are many social networks out there. From Facebook which was "College" only social network until now. To Myspace which people consider the "rockstar" of social network.

I prefer Myspace for it's flashy colors, music, videos and let's face it, everyone seems to be on there. From your 8yr old niece to your 80 yr old grandma it's the in thing.

Facebook I like for it's more "adult" type of network. I usually go there to talk to people from college about homework and going ons around campus.

There are several choices out there to fit your need. Just go out and take the first step!

Post about Technology

USELESS technology that is!

Our useless but cool technology of the day goes to TokyoFlash watches.

These watches are there to confuse the person that asks "Hey buddy, what time is it!?".

You then show them you're cool yet confusing "Tokyoflash" watch and watch as the innocent bystander goes "Huh?".

Yes these watches look like something out of Startrek from some Romulans or Klions.

Have at the example:

Yes the time on the watch is 11:04! You can only tell by the instructions that come with the watch.. and with some practice (and even then, sheesh).

Here's another example:

Here's another confusing one! THE MADNESS!!!

And while we're at it.. let me link you the DVICE website.
It has more funnies on the watch.

To wrap it up.. I want one. I'm the type of guy that loves to watch confused faces with a wicked grin on his face.

Wiki are stickies

Ah the good old wiki.

Good but old!?

Of course in computer standard. Wiki's have been around a bit already and have helped many many people get information at one place otherwise found scattered.

Wikipedia.org is a perfect example of a Wiki. Matter of fact Wiki's where named after Wikiwikiweb engine.

The most known wiki is Wikipedia. A wiki is probably known more as an online dictionary. User's are able to access the information freely and as matter of factly users are the ones that write Wiki's.

Users gather information and type out a Wiki. Wiki's can have: Timelines, Business Dates, History, Characteristics etc...

Wiki's can also be in different languages as seen on Wikipedia.org

There are several thousand wiki's online helping people everyday!

Enjoy Wikipedia.org.

You may become a useless fact guy like me.

Library 2.0 & Web 2.0

Imagine a library with no books on paper but on a digital medium.

Imagine instead of checking out a book, you instead checkout a CD, DVD, a Holographic Displayer for your information.

Imagine the future library as a place where people can go and instead of it just a place that have people quieting you it is a place where people share their ideas.

Instead of you running to the library the digital content can and will be accessed at home for your pleasure.

This is the idea behind Library 2.0 and Web 2.0.

It seems that the arguments are for a more liberated library system that gives you information in digital content but all in one place or website.

Imagine this scenario. You walk into the library system in the future. You ask the librarian a question on world economics. She looks the information on her LCD screen and it pops up all the books on that subject. But wait.. not only that but other books that compliment that subject.

It is given to you in a small, unintrusive cd jewel case with all the information you asked for. You go home, sit down and read it on your Ebook reader. At the bottom there are links to the referenced material that are also on that CD.

The library seems to be changing to cater to the customer. The library can be a place where people come in.. read information and share their thoughts with one another. A Socrates gathering, Plato and so on.

There are still plenty of hurdles to overcome for this to be achieved. Training for one may leave old librarians behind in the future. Updating information and correlating it to one another for reference. Huge databanks and software/hardware to give materials to patrons.

I do believe though that this is the correct step towards a better library system.

Read up and Enjoy:

Technorati...technorati

Today we'll be talking about Technorati and how convoluted it is.

Technorati isn't bad per se but I think it could use a better search engine.. or something.

Searching in different search field resulted is some results (links) being the same and others being results of the same material.

Searching for computer related media turned out alot of hits. Searching for asteroids for example turned out with a considerable amount of lower hits. It seems the tech related field is very popular in technorati.

Searched information on Library 2.0 and other co-workers blogs. It found several of them and I did a spider-crawl myself through them.

Well Technorati isn't so bad as I can imagine how much more powerful it'll be as more updates and new features are implemented.

Ah it's so Del.icio.us

Yes indeed it is.

What am I talking about you flagrant, indecipherable blogger!

Oh come on now! I've always deciphered my blogs and explained myself.

Well sometimes.

Now back to Del.icio.us and yes you ask, what is it.

No seriously pay attention this is a nifty little program. Go to http://del.icio.us/ and register yourself so you can join the party. But before you do let me tell you about why you should register.

Reason 1:
Every cool person is doing it and you want to be cool don't you!?

Reason 2:
It saves all your bookmarks!

But you say "Well my browser does that already". Of course it does but does it save your bookmarks so that another computer can view them!? Yes I enjoy being right!

Reason 3:
Saves your bookmarks so you can view them at any computer with internet, lol.

Reason 4:
It makes it easy for you to follow websites you like and their news. It's like RSS feeds without the RSS stuff.

So what do you need to do make this work.

Go to Delicious and register. Look up websites and bookmark them. Go to any computer with internet later on and then you can checkout the bookmarks later. Look around and find people with the largest hit and see what their booksmarks are. You may find people with the same taste as you and all you need to do is subscribe to them.

Remember also that you can "Tag" websites on what material they show. News website tag it with "News" or "Newspaper". Computer website tag it with "PC" "Computer" or "PC Gaming News". You'll be unstoppable with your "tagging".

It'll also make it easier for you friends to register and look at your bookmarks that you've tagged. Wonderful system.

It's easy. Enjoy and bookmark me! :D *Shameless plug*
